Gum tenderness can be caused by vigorous brushing, gingivitis/gum disease, irritation caused by braces or dentures, or for some women, changes related to hormones, pregnancy, or menopause. Until you’re able to see us for an assessment, we recommend that you use a toothbrush with soft bristles, rinse your mouth with warm salt water, and/or use an over-the-counter painkiller such as Tylenol to treat any pain. It’s also important that you continue to maintain a regular dental hygiene routine of flossing and brushing until you can be examined.
